What joy to watch one leap, to see
its transformation like a maple leaf in fall.
How sad if my one compatriot could not
complete its upstream swim. Yet even then,
what bliss for the bear grown thin
on berries and roots of skunk cabbage.

Near the Arctic Circle

The selection of poems in Near the Arctic Circle were inspired by the poet’s participation in the Arctic Circle expeditionary residency program, where she lived and worked on-board a traditionally rigged Barquentine tall ship while sailing the waters of the international territory of Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago just 10 degrees latitude from the North Pole.
